PAINTING PROCESSES

The painting process is one of the most important applications for the long-lasting use of products. It consists of several processes that are applied successively to the finished product. We can list these processes as surface preparation process, primer paint application and topcoat painting, respectively.

Surface Preparation Process:

In order for a paint layer to be durable, first of all, the paint must adhere firmly to the metal surface. This depends on the cleanliness of the surface. If there is rust, dust, dirt, various foreign substances and especially oil on the surface, the paint cannot adhere to the metal surface. Surface cleaning is the basis of coating quality. If the paint layer does not fully adhere to the metal surface, the water vapor penetrating from the surface collects here and causes the paint to swell in that area in a short time.

The methods to clean the metal surface before painting and the degree of cleanliness of the surfaces are set forth in detail by the standards. SIS (Standard Institution of Swedish) standards have been accepted by the Turkish Standards Institute.

In the solvent wiping method, which is the simplest cleaning method, oil, grease, … etc. on the surface. In order to dissolve and remove, spraying on the surface with a suitable solvent, cleaning by wiping with a brush or cloth are used in our company as a preparation stage before painting, considering the ease of application.

As another surface preparation process, surface sandblasting is performed. This process is provided as external supply upon request by the quality department before and after the welding process and before the paint process. Unless otherwise stated, SA2,5 sandblasting is done. Evaluated according to the supplier evaluation procedure, it is made by the company with the best evaluation among the companies providing sandblasting services.

Putty Process:

The way to achieve good results in paint applications is to prepare a good substrate. Putty is used to close deep scratches, pores, dents and cavities that may occur on surfaces, especially after grinding operations after welded manufacturing. In this way, defects on the surface are closed.

Sanding Process:

The defects filled with putty are cleaned with sandpaper and level differences are eliminated. The sanding process may vary depending on the nature of the paste applied, or it is done after a certain period of time. Abrasives are selected in accordance with the paste structure and finer grained sandpaper is used as the level difference decreases.

Primer Paint Process:

Primer paints, like normal topcoat paints, can be applied to the metal surface by brush, gun, etc. Depending on the purpose and the condition of the place where it will be applied. İmplemented by one of the methods. It is appropriate to apply it in a short time after sandblasting.

Rules Considered in Primer Paint Production:

- The surface to be primed is cleaned very well and the surface is purified from foreign materials.

- If there are traces and roughnesses on the surface, putty is applied and closed so that the paint can be smooth.

If the primer paint application will be made more than once, it is waited until it dries between the coats. Drying time varies according to the atüre of the paint used. The primer paint is expected to dry before the topcoat is applied. The instructions given by the paint manufacturer are followed and the given times are followed.

Topcoat Paint Process:

After the primer paint application process, the RAL codes are made with the predetermined topcoat paint. After the necessary masking of the parts is made, applications are made by the master painter and the best results are obtained at the end of the most suitable curing time according to the specifications given by the paint manufacturer.
